Closer

"...forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

- Philippians 3:13-14

"I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice,

and it told thy love to me;

but I long to rise in the arms of faith

and be closer drawn to thee."

- Fanny Crosby, Draw Me Nearer

"So, I'm a Christian - what now?"

After that salvation experience, that baptism moment, or that first bible study, what happens?

After those pinnacle moments in our Christian journey, when heaven drew nearer than ever, often comes a temptation to relax, to forget how God has led us in the past, or to think that we've gone far enough. Even Bible heroes like Elijah and Moses were not immune to this. For example, just days after calling fire down from heaven in an epic showdown with the evil King Ahab, Elijah runs and hides in a cave, terrified that Queen Jezebel will find and kill him, and forgetting so soon how God has protected him. Or Moses, who presumptuously murders an Egyptian taskmaster trying to 'help God out' and ends up fleeing for his life to the desert. What changed between the miracles and the mess-ups? What caused the mighty men of faith to fall flat on their faces? One moment of anger, or unbelief. All it took was one unguarded emotion, one moment where they took their eyes off God and stopped relying on Him fully. Sad as these stories are, they teach us a valuable lesson, that, as followers of Jesus, we can never stop growing and 'looking unto Jesus." (Hebrews 12:2) As Christians, we need to constantly be desiring a closer walk with God, "a higher plane than I have found, Lord plant my feet on higher ground." Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:31, "I die daily," referencing the need for constant surrender to God. The Christian journey is ever leading upward, higher and higher, "nearer, still nearer, close to Thy heart..."
